Prepare this delicious recipe in 3 simple steps

Make a Catalan arepa at home is easier than it looks. The best thing about this recipe is that you don't need any complicated ingredients and the result is so delicious that you'll want to make it more than once.

Ingredients needed for 3 arepas

  • 1 ¼ cup water.
  • 1 cup pre-cooked maize flour.
  • ½ teaspoon butter.
  • A pinch of salt.
  • 1 Catalan fuet.
  • 1 ripe tomato.
  • 1 spring onion.
  • Sweet and sour gherkins.
  • Pepper.
  • Olive oil.
  • A teaspoon of mustard (optional for an extra touch).

Preparation of the arepas

  • In a bowl, pour the water and add a pinch of salt. Gradually stir in the maize flour (if possible PAN flour) while stirring to avoid lumps. Let the mixture stand for 2 minutes so that the flour is well hydrated.
  • Add the butter to the dough and knead with your hands until smooth and lump-free. Divide the dough into three equal portions.s and dales, in the form of discs, of about 10 cm in diameter and 1 cm thick.
  • Place the arepas in a preheated budare (or frying pan) and cook them over a medium heat for a few minutes.e 4-5 minutes on each side, until golden brown. For the finishing touch, place them in the preheated oven at 250 °C for 5 minutes. This will make them crispier on the outside, just as they should be! 
  • If you don't have an oven, you can leave them in the budare for a little longer, on a low heat, so that they are well cooked.

Preparation of the filling

  • Withdraws lhe skin of the fuet and cut into small squares. Chop the chives and tomato and cuts the sweet and sour gherkins thinly sliced.
  • In a bowl, combine the fuet, spring onion, tomato and gherkins. Add a teaspoon of mustard, a pinch of pepper and a drizzle of olive oil. Mix well so that the flavours integrate.

Assemble the arepas

With the ready-made arepas and while still warm, carefully open them in half. Fill them generously with the mixture. you prepared. Serve immediately to enjoy the full flavour of the Catalan arepa.
